[FIX] “Something Happened And The Windows 8.1 Couldn’t Be Installed. Error Code: 0xc1900104”

In the last couple of weeks, most of the Windows 8 users were busy in updating their system to Windows 8.1. The guys who have got Windows 8 as pre-installed on their machine are getting this update as free. So, many users have faced various issues while upgrading to Windows 8.1. Recently, we published out the fix about error 0xC1900101 – 0×40017. Also we’ve recently told you about getting automatically logged out in Windows 8.1 after a minute. Now, today in this article, we’ll discuss about error 0xc1900104.

Something Happened And The Windows 8.1 Couldn’t Be Installed. Error Code: 0xc1900104.

Following is the screenshot we’ve just received while installing Windows 8.1 on a dual boot system:

As you can see in the above image, there is nothing to help you out with this error except the Try again and Cancel install buttons, which takes you nowhere. So how to fix this error and more importantly, why this error is shown up? Well, after doing some research with the log files of the system on which issue was actually faced, I concluded two things:

• There may be the issue of limited drive space which is prohibiting installation

• May be your computer thinks that your system is Windows to Go system

The latter point mentioned above solved the issue for me. Here is what I did and got rid of this problem:

FIX : “Something Happened And The Windows 8.1 Couldn’t Be Installed. Error Code: 0xc1900104”

1. Press + R and put regedit in Run dialog box to open Registry Editor (if you’re not familiar with Registry Editor, then click here). Click OK.

2. Navigate here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

3. In the left pane of this location, look for the PortableOperatingSystem subkey to Control key as highlighted in the image above. Right click on it and select Delete. You may now close the Registry Editor and reboot the system to get fixed.
