How to enable Sleeping tabs in Microsoft Edge (Chromium)

Method 1 – Using Microsoft Edge Settings

Follow these steps to enable Sleeping tabs.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge. Click on triple dots to open fly-out menu and select Settings.
  2. In the Settings screen, click on hamburger icon and click System.
  3. Under System, locate Save resources. To enable Sleeping tabs, turn On the Save resources with sleeping tabs option. You can then configure the time, after which tabs will be in Sleeping mode due to inactivity. You can also add the sites you frequently visit, to configure the setting targeting specific sites.

How to enable sleeping tabs in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Your settings must be saved, so you can restart the browser to make them effective.

Method 2 – Using Group Policy

If you are an IT admin, you can enable Sleeping tabs on client’s machine using Group Policy.

  1. Open Group Policy Editor.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
  3. Set the Sleeping Tabs settings policy to Enabled.
  4. Close Group Policy Editor and run gpupdate /force to make changes effective.
