^^ Please try to reset app cache, Go to Start Screen, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter.

    Have the troubleshooter fixed anything?

  • It fixed some drivers, seems like resetting app cache worked. Thanks.

  • Windows update tool searches for updates and says there are 8 critical and 2 optional. I click on Install Updates and within a few seconds I get this error code and it simply says Windows Update has encountered a problem. I have run the troubleshooter numerous times and is always says it finds two problems and fixes them. Then when I try to run Updates I get the same error message. Any suggestions

^^ Troubleshooter may not be able to fix critical issue. Try the DISM commands:

And also try to reset Windows Update components:

  • How do I get rid of Windows 8 & revert to Windows 7? When is Windows 9 coming?

  • For some reason, I no longer have the option of sending files to a compressed folder (by right clicking on the file and then using the menu to “sent to” a compressed file. Also, the zip icon under the Share tab in Files Explorer is greyed out, so I can’t create the zip file that way either. Is there a setting that I need to change to get back the ability to create a zip file in Windows 8? I downloaded and am currently using a 3rd party zip application as a replacement for Win 8 zip, but just wonder why it’s no longer available. I’d appreciate any help!

  • Kapil Arya

    ^^ Have you tried 7-zip?

  • No. but I’ll try n let u knw

  • I have tried reinstalling Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit with same problem. Reinstalled Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, Microsoft 7000 wireless keyboard and mouse hardware, tried using the Microsoft hardware update for HID, USB. Uninstalled hardware from Microsoft 7000 and tried everything I can think of to stop my mouse from freezing. I check the event viewer and it states kernel (false) 41, and other events 40, all events recurring constantly and ever so aggravating and frustrating. I have tried 32 bit forays again with no luck even though the hardware states 32 bit hardware installed. HELP, PLEASE!!!!!!! I have submitted this problem before but to no avail, have followed advice given with reinstallation of both 7000 hardware, windows 7 reinstall, windows 8 pro reinstall, have gone to bios and turned off mouse and keyboard embedded in my motherboard peripheral device section. Tried 8.02 Microsoft updated mouse and keyboard software from Microsoft. Is it possible that my wireless transceiver is defective? It does flash when I type or move mouse before the mouse AND keyboard becomes froze, but when I go to the mouse and push the button, it comes on and stays on until I reboot the desktop. By the way, I have tried the recover and repair, maintenance, and all the other embedded troubleshooting programs that comes with Windows 8.

  • I just got the new Microsoft Windows 8 laptop for college. I had a previous iTunes account on my old computer at home. I also have an iPhone, so I am able to buy songs.. but not back them up to my computer, obviously, because I am six hours from my old computer.

Can someone please help me figure out how to transfer the music from my account on the old computer to this computer? I don’t know what else to do. I’m afraid I’ll lose all my music if I try it myself. PLEASE HELP.

^^ You can refer to the method of this article:

  • Hi all

I bought a new computer this week and did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro on it last night from Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit. All went fine, but after I was up and running, about halfway through reloading all my programs and downloading my apps I noticed that some of my Windows 8 icons/interface graphics had been corrupted.

Basically on the Start screen, when you right click a program the taskbar then pops up at the bottom. Where it says Uninstall/Unpin from Start etc. there are usually icons above these such as a pin etc. These have disappeared and I now have 3 rectangles above each option and I don’t know why. Can anyone help?

  • I have a Windows 8 laptop and an Android phone, and am looking to find a way to sync calendars between them. I’m not too fussed about using any particular calendar system, but just want to have the same info on both and be able to edit on both.

I’ve spent hours searching for a solution online and not had much luck. I just need either to be able to sync the calendar app on Windows 8 with google calendar (if anyone has found a workaround that actually works…), a Windows calendar app which can sync with a google account or an Android app which can sync with a Windows (hotmail) account, or a third party calendar which can sync with both…

    Any ideas much appreciated!

(Of course I realise I could just use google calendar online in the browser, but I’d prefer something installed on the computer for the sake of notifications etc…)

  • Kapil Arya

^^ The Calendar app was original able to sync to Google Calendar, but Google is turning of their Exchange Active Sync support soon and switching to the “CalDAV” format instead for calendar sync. Microsoft is adding this into the Calendar app.

In the meantime, if you are willing to use the Calendar (which is your Hotmail account calendar), you can sync that to your phone — just setup the Hotmail account on your phone using Exchange Active Sync, and choose to sync your calendar.

  • Whenever i press shutdown or restart, the computer won’t react. But instead, a process called ” Windows Start-Up Application ” appears in task manager and is using ~25% of my cpu . This happened in the past b4 and i think it was related to my external hdd connected by esata (AHCI). I fixed it by turning it on and off. But this time it doesn’t fix the issue.

This started a couple of days ago when i was using the external hdd. After i was done, i turned it off while the computer was on. After several sleep/hibernation, i notice i can’t turn off my computer/restart it.

    -Fast start up is disabled
-this happens in safe mode too
    -didn’t install any updates
-I am dual booting with windows 7 x64 and it doesn’t happen on that.
-Attempted a clean boot but liek i said, it won’t shut down or restart
    -it can hibernate and sleep
    -tried different power plans
-when i end the process ” Windows Start-Up Application ” , it BSOD.

PS: I would also like to add that if i press the power button on my pc, the screen will say ” shutting down…” for a very long time and it never does shut down.

Please help me to fix this:::::

  • I want to dual boot Windows 8 and 7.I currently have windows 8 but I need 7 for some reason. When I install 2 versions of windows it ask me every time which one do I want.Is it possible to make bootmanager show up on boot up only if I hold some button(like on mac)?

  • Kapil Arya

^^ I think there is no possibility to hold any key to just show up the boot manager when you want, not at least for Windows. But you can try EasyBCD, to add the Windows 7 entry when you need it, and remove when you don’t.

  • Not long after updating Win8 to Win8.1, I’ve had all sorts of problems logging when I restart my computer. Every time I do restart my computer, Win 8.1 goes through making me receive a Code (via Phone) sent from Microsoft Support to login. I knew what my password was, but kept getting errors it was not correct. I did not have Caps Lock on, etc.

Once I completed setting up a new password with my MS Account, Win 8.1 creates a brand new Win 8.1 User Profile saying it could not login to my original user profile. This process takes a considerable amount of time. Once Win 8.1 finally does login and the new profile is complete, all my personal folders & files are unavailable, bookmarks AND all settings are gone.

I ran Advanced System Care Ultimate 7 to fix any Registry or System Errors to no avail. I ran a full Boot Scan with Avast A/V Ultimate 7 to no avail. I tried going back into my previous Users Folder and choose my original profile to no avail. I ran Windows System Restore and tried a few different restore points, but SOS time and time again. I tried to run an Advanced System Restore, but could not find the feature.

    Need help

  • Dear kapil, thanks for your personal reply. I truly appreciate it. So, re-capping my win8.1 boot up issues: last wee, Windows 8.1 could not start. Gave me a Boot error:
“Your pc needs to be repaired
The required boot configuration data file is missing some required information.
    File bootbcd
    Error code: 0xc000000f”

So, i disconnected the SATA 640GB HDD form my desktop Gateway FX4701 quadcore 8GB memory PC, connected it to an external enclosure, and on to a laptop and it showed me the HDD and then it went thru – “refresh – restore- repair” page. i tried each of teh 5 windows and nothing happened.

Disconnected the HDD from laptop, connected to my main desktop PC, disconnected other 2 SATA HDDs, then powered up. The initial boot showed me the repair-refresh-restore” windows, but when clicked on these, it shows something is happening, but brings me back to the “bios setting – F2 & F10 prompts”.
now, i am stuck. I read thru’ all your existing suggestions and your reply as well. Sorry to say but to no avail!
I really need this PC going.
Q: is it possible i connect the HDD to my laptop, look up the C:Windows folder, do some tweaking there first by removing some unwated errors, repair a BCD error, etc, etc, etc &, then put this back on the desktop PC?

    Kapil and friends,
i really am boggled by this issue. Please advice.
With sincere thank you, — rajs

  • Hi
My old computer used to run XP Pro.
Then, I bought an upgrade to 8 Pro on a DVD and installed 32-bit version.
Later, I upgraded that one to 8.1 on-line, still 32-bit.
Now, I’m about to build a new PC and dump the old one.
I still have the media and license keys for XP Pro and and the 8 Pro upgrade.
How do I get to run Windows 8.1 64-bit on my new machine instead of the old one without buying a new Windows? (I don’t care about preserving anything from the old PC).
Do I really have to install XP, upgrade to 8 and then to 8.1, and is that even possible?

  • Hi Kapil, recently bought a win 8.1 lenovo pc. I am not able to connect to internet (Ethernet, wired). The hathway modem has just a LAN cable which connects directly to the network port of pc. There are no ISP settings. ipv4 setting are “obtain manually”. This setup works on my old laptop with win 7. What I tried 1) Updated Realtek Ethernet driver 2) your registry permission solution 3) netsh reset for ip and winsock 4) ip4 dns to manually and Cannot update win 8.1 due to lack of internet connection. Help, thanks Pranjal

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Hey, just confirm first that there is nothing wrong with modem or cable by plugging it to different machine not running Windows 8. If it works fine on that machine, then try to flush DNS Cache on Windows 8 OS by running ipconfig /flushdns command at administrative Command Prompt, see if that helps.

  • Hi, The setup works on win 7 laptop. I did flushdns and restarted the m/c and modem. The network is “unidentified and limited”. ISP says that no special settings are required. IPv4 setting is “obtain automatically” and not manually as I wrote in my previous comment. Thanks, Pranjal

I am trying to avoid the long download of the Windows upgrade.

  • When I try to upgrade from within windows 7, the process stalls at the “the following issues need to be resolved*” screen, which is blank, despite refresh. I have used the recommended browser command, which tells me “Your language packs will need to be reinstalled in windows 8.1”, which is odd as I don’t have any additional language packs installed. Also worth mentioning that when I run windows update, there are no optional language packs available to install.
So I tried to reset my PC from the boot menu, but when I do this, I get the message “Please insert your recovery / installation media*” and it doesn’t recognise my install DVD (created by downloading the ISO from MS). I also tried to create a recovery drive from my Windows 8.1 laptop and this isn’t recognised either.
I have tried installing after a clean boot and I have unplugged everything except the keyboard and mouse from the PC. I have never experienced a problem like this with previous MS products. No idea what is the matter. Please help.

  • Hi,
In windows 8.1 on my laptop the photo tile, right clicking does not give the option to turn on or off the live function see attached screen shot. Originally it was a windows 7 system but upgraded to 8 then 8.1. There has been a recent reformat with a lengthy reinstall (7 – 8 – 8.1) previous the tile/app worked fine.
However the weather tile and other tiles do give this option, see screen shot. I have tried turning off and on shuffle option etc.
I have tried the app troubleshooter, followed troubleshoot steps for apps, deleted locate data and still it does not work.
    Any suggestion please?

  • I am having a Dell Inspiron 15 3537 laptop which has an integrated graphics card of “AMD Radeon 8670m.” My laptop doesn’t wake up from sleep when the driver of the graphics card (AMD Catalyst Control Center) is installed on my system. As soon as I uninstall the driver, I face no problem in sleep mode.
But installing the graphics card driver restores the sleep problem. When I press the power button, or close the lid or put to sleep manually from power options, the screen of my laptop switches off but doesn’t wake up when tried upon. In this situation, my laptop needs to be switched off by using the power button and requires to be restarted again. Please helP.

I went to display/navigation settings set the option to use it at logon and when everything is closed, however it does not go back to the native interface after closing a program. I tried alt-tabbing and i get nothing. Alt-f4 gets me a shutdown pannel and taskmgr only lists itself.

After upgrading my OS to windows 8.1, I am using the same wi-fi connection last week, I’ve never been able to connect in that wi-fi net work? However, when i use the same sim card in a usb stick/dongle to connect to the internet, i can easily connect it. Hence internet connection from my provider is working fine. • Hi,
I had to do a system restore a while back since an optional update (KB3000850, I think) in conjunction with my antivirus (Avast!) caused my computer to be almost unusable. Unfortunately, the computer was switched off during the system restore and the computer had to perform boot repairs and all the usual nonsense. Afterwards, it seemed to be in perfect working order except for the fact that I couldn’t actually get any updates through Windows Update. KB3000850 is still in my update history as a successful update, but I can’t uninstall it because it’s supposedly not there, and if ever I tried to download other updates, they would immediately take me back to the screen telling me how many updates I could download.
Today, Windows actually managed to download some updates, but they all failed and the troubleshooter told me to open an elevated command prompt and run the following:
    “dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth”
    “dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth”
The first went off without a hitch, but the second one failed at 80% giving me error 1726:

Trying to access the Microsoft Store using the Store Icon on the Windows Screen. When the Icon is selected an error message appears – “server problem or the network connection timed out”, (0x80072ee2).
The internet connection is up an running and I have search past forums and followed directions for clearing the cache, resetting the local time zone and date, etc… no luck.
How do I resolve this issue?

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Checkout the suggestions mentioned here :

  • First off … awesome site. Thank you.
    Windows 8.1 Connectivity issue.
My parents hp was infected with a trojan/virus. (Tovia?)

Through a combination of malwarebytes, and mcafee, I believe it’s all been removed.
Now that I’ve finally got the proxy settings back to automatic and off of a proxy server the “Desktop apps” appear to be accessing the internet just fine. However, “modern/metro” apps are not accessing the internet.

    Windows Store can not connect
I can’t verify their microsoft account (because it can’t connect)
iCloud control panel can’t sync outlook contacts because it can’t connect.
Several “modern/metro” apps have disappeared from the start screen
I can’t login to a different user account because it can’t connect to the internet to setup the account.

Oddly though modern ie can connect?

    Steps I’ve tired.
    Reset Windows store
    Reset Internet settings
    Turned on and off firewall
Used process explorer to investigate any unknown active programs or dlls
Ran the process you described in:
[FIX] Can’t Open Windows Store In Windows 8 Or Later
[FIX] Repair Your Windows 8 Using DISM Commands
[FIX] Download Microsoft Account & Windows Store Apps Troubleshooters

^^ Try SFC /SCANNOW command at administrative Command Prompt and reboot, see if it helps.

  • Hello,

I’ve run the sfc /scannow and came up with a list of corrupt system files. I’ve tried but have come up with error code 0x800f0906 (+CategoryInfo: NotSpecified: (:) Repair-WindowsImage], COMException +FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Dism.Commands.RepairWindowsImageCommand) and then have tried to solve the error code. Needless to say it didn’t help. I’m unable to refresh or reformat ( or (windows) update (Code 80246007 and 80070002) and I think it’s all related to these corrupt system files. Please help!

I have the sfc details in xls and would be happy to send if its relevant.

  • Hello,
I have been trying to repair my 2 year old Asus laptop with Win 8.1 all week, doing everything I can find on forums, etc., but going nowhere.
I don’t even know where to start, but here are some highlights of what’s wrong:
Automatic Repair on boot-up won’t complete and yields a message re: “Log file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\srtTrail.txt”
Refresh Your PC, Reset Your PC both don’t work (Reset Won’t work due to something re the partition).
sfc /scandisk does not work: “Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service”
Ran several malware emergency programs, and found nothing
Ran Chkdsk /r and /f, found and repaired many issues on c. Won’t complete on partitioned d drive (hung on stage 5 for 24 hours, no harddrive light movement)
Got this error message along the way, but can’t remember where: error code 0x80070490
Command prompt will not run .exe files.
Was able to use robocopy through command prompt, and got all my data so I’m fine to reinstall Windows…except I can’t find my Windows product key anywhere on my laptop, battery, power box, or cardboard box. Nothing matches what Microsoft says it should look like – waiting to hear from Asus, but so far nothing. The machine came installed with Win 8). I have no backup disk, as this machine is partitioned and was designed to recover from the partition (but all is failing).
Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do next? Any advice would be most appreciated!

“This app wasn’t installed – view details”

  • When I first got my computer around Jan. 20, 2015 I had no problem with the wifi automatically connecting when starting up the computer for the first time in the morning. Now recently I would say past couple weeks, every time I start up the computer for the first time the wifi isn’t automatically connecting and it seems like the computer isn’t even making an effort to connect. I’ve troubleshooted the connection at which it resets the adapter and things work fine. Other times I’ve had to just got into the sidebar and click the network name and connect and it connects. I’m wondering why it’s not auto connecting on it’s own. My computer is completely updated via windows update. I’ve even went into device manager and updated the driver for my network adapter. Still same problem. I’ve went as far as completely resetting my wireless router and reconfigured the whole thing. I’ve made sure when connecting to the network there is a checkmark in connect automatically. What now?

Before, I had two computers running on the Internet Network through a router and they were working fine. Now when i try to connect to the Internet through the router, neither of the computers can connect. The message is ‘no Internet connection’. I tried changing the connector cord, but still same message. I can only use Internet if my computer is connected directly to the modem and not through the router. Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this so that all the computers will access the Internet? When I ran a diagnostic the message was : ” one or more network protocols are missing on this computer” and another says ‘restore network protocols’, and another says windows socket registry entries required for network connectivity are missing.’

So, I start with the Xbox One pad and everthing works as I expect it, but as soon as I connect one or more 360 pads, they are assigned before the Xbox One pad (e.g. if I use the Xbox One Controller and three 360 Controllers, the 360 controllers will be assigned to Slots 1-3 and the Xbox One pad is pad 4). The connection method has no influence on the behaviour, it occurs on both wired and wireless connetions.

Is there any way to avoid this? Or, a way to reassign them manually would be fine as well. I just want the Xbox One pad to stay the primary controller.

  • Hi Kapil I am having the most unusual, and agrivating problem; with my computer. I have Internet connection, all of a sudden. My browers, they just stop working. Nothing! All that I have, is a white screen. I viewed your video, to down load first. Winsock and Winsock2 files, then uninstall my Winsock and Winsock2. Then merge, the new Winsock files. If I, did this. Would that clear up, this problem I am having permanently?

  • Kapil Arya

^^ You’ve to do that in a single session. Delete Winsock entries, merge them and then reboot. That should have help.

  • hai Kapil i am having every time in windows 7 or 8.1 or 10 some time when i open any application that program not responding why ?
some times in excel or working time automatically closing why ? in my office i am facing problems.

  • Kapil Arya

^^ See is this helps you:

  • I have a brand new Toshiba Laptop and I am running Windows 10 OS. I am having wi fi connection issues. I have gone to a few different blogging websites to look for answers. I even scheduled a phone call with Microsoft, and the instruction given was not sufficient. I have tried a few methods for this problem, and, none have worked. So, basically what is happening is that I can connect to the wi fi router (most of the time when I first start up, sometimes I can’t then either). But, the problem usually occurs after I start up. Within 5 minutes and sometimes up to an hour or two I may not have any problems; but eventually this problem(s) happen, and, they happen everyday and multiple times. So, I’ll be doing something in a window/tab and the connection bars will slowly drop and all of a sudden one of two things will happen:
    1) I will still be connected to the router, but it will say (secured, not connected). Or:
    2) I will be dropped completely. And, this is the worse, because when I am dropped completely I have a really hard time reconnecting. Sometimes, when this happens, I won’t even be able to find my router in the list of connection options.

So, when #1 happens, it’s really weird b/c when I try to run the trouble shooter, more often than not, before it finds an issue, I am reconnected and the T.S. will tell me that there is no problem. On those occasions that it does find a problem it will tell me a few things. A) problem with access point or network adapter. B) It will tell me ‘one or more protocols are missing on the computer. The B has only come up once or twice, rarely. The number one comes up most all the time when the troubleshooter finds something. What’s even more strange is when this problem occurs, I open another tab, try to open, go to the bottom right where you click to find your connection/router list and where you can go to network/sharing center/etc, then if my router is showing in the list, I’ll go up, click it a couple of time (I’m not connecting or disconnecting, I’m just clicking on it) and within seconds it goes from ‘secured/not connected’ to ‘secured/internet connected’
I am not sure my clicking on the router does anything but I just want you to know exactly what I see and do
So, when letter B happens it usually get’s so bad that I have to restart my computer in order for it to find my router again.

Of all my searching through various websites, I seemed to have found the trouble on the Toshiba website. Alot of the people are saying that there is a Problem with Qualcomm Atheros AR956x wireless network adapter that came with my laptop. Of course, there are lots of people giving answers there too. And, though I am pretty intelligent, some of the answers don’t even make sense to me. Or, the answers are so complex that I am afraid to try them because I am afraid of making the problem worse and/or creating a new problem.

Can you please help me?? I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

  • I found that Microsoft is forcing its users to upgrade to windows 10 and trying to take personal information after upgrading it, moreover Edge is one of the worst browsers I never ever had seen in my life, it could be rude to write this comment because of my personal and my clients experience, I am forced to showcast it. Edge gets many popups and fake scam websites after popup blocker is enabled, Worst customer experience and if anyone asks the rating for microsoft, it will be negative, Thank you for providing an opportunity for feedback, Vinod

  • Windows 10 went blank on me after trying to reset it. All I can get into now is command prompt. In trying to revert pending actions from the image, I got an error code 0x800f082f. How can I fix this in command prompt? Thanks Bob

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Though you got different error code, see if FIX 1 of this post helps you:

  • I ran chkdsk c: /r/x got Found no problems. No further action required. Below this was Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50. I then ran sfc /SCANNOW an got There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Could not reboot. I then ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and got DISM does not support servicing windows PE with the /online option Error 50. I then tried running dism.exe /image : c : \ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions and got The scratch directory size might be insufficient to preform this operation. This can cause unexpected behavior. Use the /ScratchDir option to point to a folder with sufficient scratch space. The recommended size is at least 1024MB. Reverting pending actions from the image.
Error 0x800f082f. Tried your fix for Error 0x800f081f and got Error 50 again.

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Odd, is there any System Restore points available on your machine? If yes, you may try restoring the system and see if it makes any differences in situation.

  • I have a HP Stream Labtop that came loaded with Windows 10. No restore points have been created. System Image Recovery says it can’t find a system image on this computer. Startup Repair says it couldn’t repair my PC. Startup Settings says your PC did not start correctly. Go Back TO Previous Build says we couldn’t find a previous build to go back to. Under UEFI Filmware Settings it has F1-system information, F2-system diagnostic, F9- boot drive options says OS boot manager (UEFI) – windows boot manager ( SDW32G), which is highlighted or Boot from EFI File. F10- BIOS Setup version F.18. The only thing I forgot to tell you was when I tried to restart my computer on one occupation a dark blue screen came up in the light blue screen and ask if I wanted to clear the TPM. it said if you were resetting your PC you should clear your TMP, so I did. I tried a fix for Error that I found at , but I didn’t see my name under permissions in the MiniNT folder.

  • Windows 10 downloaded to our computer without our doing it.

Now the start menu doesn’t work

The printer doesn’t work. I’ve tried to update the drivers but the computer doesn’t recognize the printer – it works with my laptop.

I’ve tried some of the fixes for the start menu problem that I’ve been comfortable with except the registry one as that one seems too complicated for me.

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Multiple issues and seems like update is broken. You may go ahead with reinstalling Windows 10 without affecting your files:

  • Thanks, for trying to help.

  • Dear Kapil, I am using windows 10 Pro, I want to update Windows 10 Anniversary update but failed every time. The downloading is completed every time but installation is not completed, I have tried everything here to no avail, and windows update troubleshooter says the missing or corrupt registry. Everything goes okay until I get to 76% on the install and it then auto finishes, and promptly restarts and restore my previous version, this has happened when trying to update i had tried alll your suggestions but dosent get a success. After doing this step sfc / scannow I just received this what i should do now?????

windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS. Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example c:\windows\Logs\CBS\CBS\.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenario.

    Please do something.

  • Kapil Arya

^^ SFC scan results shows that your system has corrupted files, so run third DISM command mentioned here to fix them: Also, I suggest you to download Windows 10 ISO file containing Anniversay Update and upgrade using it. Get ISO from here:

  • Kapil Arya

    ^^ Please perform Startup Repair:

  • Hi there Kapil,

I’m desperate for a solution to the following problem. Airplane mode is enabled and it doesn’t turn off. I can’t connect my windows 10 desktop to the Internet. This happened after a mandatory update, which btw lost me work since Microsoft just forced my computer to restart. After this enraging experience , my wifi just stopped connecting and I can see the airplane mode button sometimes appearing and sometimes not.
I’ve tried your solution to find RadioEnable in the registry and change the values but that file is nowhere to be found.
I’ve tried rebooting in safe mode and the problem still persists.
I’ve tried system restore but I can’t turn the clock back since I haven’t enabled it before the force-fed updates. Finally, I’ve tried cursing at the screen which felt really good, but it didn’t help either.

I have had a lot of stupid windows problems in my life but this one takes the cake. It really just blows my mind. Can u please, for the love of God, help me out here?

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Since you tried all possible options, make a refresh to Windows 10 (without affecting your data):

  • Kapil Arya

^^ When you start your machine, kindly press the boot selection key (on my laptop its F9, it may be same or some other key on your laptop). Using the boot selection menu, select your hard disk and that should brought operating system. If not, try performing Startup Repair:

  • Hi Kapil, thanks for helping all us amatures in restoring our windows PC!
My Win10 is not booting and I have followed few steps you mentioned in Command prompt and tried restoring the system. Unsuccessful.
System restore did not complete success. Your computer’s system files and settings were not changed.

And unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070780).
Can you guide and help me please? Thanks.

  • Kapil Arya

^^ What happens when you boot the machine? Do you see any error code/message? Which commands you’ve tried? Try restoring to some different restore point. Also check:

  • A found a forum post from you giving good advice on Bitlocker issues. I recently screwed up my locked 1Tb DATA Drive E: by prematurely shutting down (hold down the PWR button) my laptop which rendered Drive E: inaccessible. also the Bitlocker Applet is missing so I’m force to use CMD. I researched and read before tinkering. I tried using the C:\>repair-bde E: F: -rp 665808-164791-199837… but at the end of the scan it basically told me:
“Please try a different recovery password, recovery key or password”.
    See actual results:…

I know its the right PW b/c I got it from my MS acct! I thought of doing the CMD -changepassword to create a complete new PW to replace the possibly fragmented existing PW that can’t be redeemed.
Other than that…Where do I go from here… suggestions and How To’s please and Thank you!

  • Kapil Arya

^^ In case of BitLocker, you need to use exact recovery key. If it’s not working, use the recovery password. If both doesn’t works, it is almost impossible to recover the encrypted data. But if you still want to use the drive, you can format it and gain the space.

  • Ok, so whats the difference between the “recovery key” and the “recovery password”?
Is the “password” the same as what I would NORMALY use in the “Bitlocker Dialogue Box” to unlock drive E after logging in to the PC?
… and therefore is the “recovery KEY” referring ONLY to that 48 digit string of numbers?
The reason I ask is b/c when I ran ” C:\>repair-bde E: F: -rp 665808…” I see that I used “-rp” (recoverypassword) BUT inserted the 48 number KEY vs my PASSWORD!
So could that be why at the end it says “Please try a different recovery password, recovery key, or password”? … b/c I used the KEY instead of the PW when “-rp” was the command… for some reason, I thought that terminology referenced the same thing, KEY & PW were the same.

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Assuming you’re on Windows 10, download the ISO file free of cost from here:

Then go ahead with steps mentioned here:

  • Hello Kapil, I have problem with connecting to EXISTING Homegroup on my x86 laptop with Windows 10 Fast Insider Builds on RS2 branch (now 15019). I can only create new homegroup on it. I have send a lot of feedbacks to Feddback Hub, but still no answer from MS. On other PC X64 with the same build EVERYTHING WORKS FINE! Other 3 PC on my Homegroup are on Win 10 RS1 and 1 with Win 7 Ultimate. I try al your fixes and registry tricks, but nothing help. Can you help me?

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Since the problem exists on Insider Preview build only, you can wait for next build and download it, hope it fix the issue 😊

  • Hello, is Windows Insider Preview still available for Lumia 520 ? I mean the latest version 15014…

  • Hello Kapil, this is the third time I am asking as the earlier two times my question went unanswered…Will the current insider preview come for Lumia 520 ?

  • Kapil Arya

^^ Sorry for delay in response but these days Microsoft doesn’t specifically mention for which model they’re releasing the build. Hence you need to check it manually and if any build doesn’t appears to you, wait for the next build and that is all you can do right now.

  • Ok fine and Thanks Kapil :)

  • My HP elitebook 8470p 64 bit Ram 8gb hdd 1 tb running windows 8.1 pro has been having freezing problems and programs not responding and sometimes closing in the middle of an operation. I think it has been infected by a virus although I have installed various antimalware softwares eg Malwarebytes, Super anti-malware, Emsisoft antimalware, Eset nod32 antivirus, Kasperky removal tool, Hitman pro among others but none of them seems to detect the problem. I used adwcleaner one time and after it had finished scanning it asked for a reboot to complete the cleanup process. I rebooted but after login a black screen appeared . I tried to press Ctrl+alt+del which opened up sometimes but when I pressed task manager the black screen with a movable cursor shows up again. I also tried to boot into safe mode by pressing shift+ restart on the login screen which worked very few times because often times it would just restart back to the login screen. Anyway while in safe mode I tried different solutions I googled such as SFC/scannow command, deleting the Windows activation folder, uninstalling the graphic card drivers, deleting the file: Windows.UI.Immersive.dll etc but none of the solutions worked.

After a while I came across this solution bootrec \fixmbr which I used and after reboot I pressed ctrl+alt+del and when I tried to open task manager the system opened up although it took around 5 minutes to load all the programs. I used it for a few hours although it would occasionally freeze and at one point it froze for about 10 minutes so I shut it down and when I started it the black screen error came back.

After multiple struggles to enter safe mode I tried another solution that was about deleting all the antivirus programs. Before this process could be completed my pc suddenly shutdown because I had not plugged in and battery had reached zero without my knowledge since while in safe mode there is no notification about the battery life. Anyway when I tried to boot my laptop it immediately went to Automatic repair but after scanning it said that automatic repair could not repair your PC so I pressed the advanced options.

I tried startup repair which failed.

I tried Refresh your pc which said There was a problem refreshing your pc. No changes were made.

I also tried System restore which gave me this error: ( System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer’s system files and settings were not changed.

System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.
    Source: %SystemRoot%\registration

    Destination: ComPlusStaging

The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point,If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method.)

I tried to get into safe mode through the startup settings but when I press f4 the automatic repair loop keeps on starting.

I decided to disable the automatic repair loop to see whether I would solve the problem which I did by using this command ( bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled No )

This brought me to a blue screen with this error:

(The operating system couldn’t be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contain errors.

    Error code:0xc000000f

Choose one of the options below to address this problem.

    Press ESC for recovery
    Press Enter to try again
    Press F8 for Startup Settings)

I have also inserted a windows 8.1 recovery disk and tried to install windows but after following all the instructions the final response is: ( The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. [Do not select Custom advanced to perform an upgrade. Custom advanced installs a new copy of Windows and deletes your programs and settings.]

Please assist because I don’t want to lose my personal files but I have no problem if all the programs were removed. Thank you

  • Hello,

To install some application on my Windows 10 home edition, I had to activate built-in administrator user. Once done, I logged onto the account and changed the password. To my stupidity, I forgot the password. I shut down my laptop then. When I logged on back, I logged into my local user. But, when I tried to install something on my local (which had admin access earlier – before enabling built-in-administrator account), I am denied and is asking administrator password – which I do not remember. How do i proceed now??? Please help
