These article has been written to resolve unexpected troubleshoot in PC etc. The article is updated regularly in successive sessions.

Please Note: In this article, we have used Windows Registry Tweak for instant solution. Making mistakes in the Windows Registry can cause serious problems with your Windows Operating System. Be sure to make a fresh backup copy of your registry prior to making any changes to it. Use the Registry Editor at your own risk.

Q.1 Whenever I Play a video clip on my PC, an error message like this interrupt me:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or a required codec might not be installed on your computer.

Sol. Such problems occur when a suitable codec  is corrupt/not installed on your PC. These problem can be resolved easily. Download this missing codec from below link. Extract this zip file and proceed as directed in readme.txt file.

Q.2 How to install a new font to my PC?

Sol. First store the font file in .ttf format C:\. To install a new font to PC, Click My Computer->Control Panel->Appearance and Themes->Fonts. On file tab click install new font and look for C:\ then find that font file and install it.

Q.3 How do I disable thumbnail generation for a specific file extension?

Sol. You can enable and disable thumbnails very easily with the K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool. If you want to do it manually, then follow the instructions below:

Start the Windows Registry Editor program: Start -> Run -> regedit.exe

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xyz\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

(replace .xyz with the desired file extension)

Right-click on “{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}” and select Delete.

Q.4 How can I force a full re-install of DirectX?

Sol. Normally the DirectX installer will refuse to install if it detects that you already have the latest version of DirectX installed. Luckily, there is a small workaround to trick the DirectX installer into a full re-installation.

Run the Registry Editor: Start -> Run -> regedit

Navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX

Change the value of version from ‘4.09.00.0904‘ to ‘4.08.00.0904‘.

Now run the DirectX installer.

Q.5 How to install XP themes?

Sol. First of all install UXTheme Multi-Patcher.

Open the zip archive. Found theme file in .msstyle format. Double click on this file will install theme otherwise tell error if any. This will bring up the windows Display Properties dialog. Click OK to apply and activate the theme. If at any point you want to change back to the standard Windows theme, just go to Control Panel -> Display and choose the theme you want.

Q.6 How to get rid of annoying tips (tips balloons) on XP?

Sol.  Open REGEDIT.

Go to following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Add the DWORD value ‘EnableBallonTips‘ and give it a value of  ‘0‘

This will stop all balloons tips from popping up.

Q.7 How to force Windows XP to reboot upon crashing?

Sol. This is a registry tweak to cause your system to reboot itself upon crashing.

Open REGEDIT

Navigate here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl

Edit the ‘Autoreboot’ value to ‘1‘.

Q.8 How can I disable desktop cleanup wizard?

Sol. In every 60 days, your PC will ask you to cleanup unused icons on desktop. You can disable this in following way:

Go to: Start->Control Panel->Display and choose the ‘Desktop‘ tab. Click the ‘Customize Desktop‘ button at the bottom. In the ‘Desktop Cleanup‘ section, clear the ‘Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard‘ Every 60 Days button.

Q.9 Whenever I right-click on Start button and select “Open”, a “Copy To”/”Move To” dialog box opens automatically.

Sol. Open REGEDIT

Go to :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\

Now here, delete this two keys:

Copy To

Move To

Q.10 I have “Error Writing To Registry Key”?

Sol. This registry error will occur when the security permissions for a registry key are incorrect.

To fix the problem, open the Registry Editor: Start -> Run -> regedit.exe

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the key that gave the error. Right-click on that key and select ‘Permissions‘. Then make sure that the Administrators group has ‘Full Control‘.

Q.11 I have no sound when play flash files like videos of Youtube?

Sol. Here are some steps to solve this problem:

1. Flash stores its files in a temporary files folder. A corrupt download can cause the sound problems.

Delete the following folders: C:\Documents and Settings\%UserName%\Application Data\Adobe\Flash Player  and C:\Documents and Settings\%UserName%\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player

2. Empty your temporary internet files.

Internet Explorer: Tools -> Internet Options

Firefox: Tools -> Clear Private Data

Opera: Tools -> Delete Private Data

3. Empty your temporary files folder.Use this command to empty your temporary files folder:

Start -> Run -> RMDIR /S /Q “%TEMP%”

4. Install the latest version of the Flash plugin. You can download it HERE. If you have problems upgrading the plugin, then uninstall your existing version first with this tool. Close your browser(s) before you run the uninstall tool.

5. Go to the Flash Player Settings Manager website. Click HERE.

Check the box called “Allow third-party Flash content to store data on your computer.” Click on the button to remove the data that the Flash plugins has stored for websites that you have visited.

6. Check if your sound device settings are correct:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Audio

7. If you have QuickTime installed, then go to the QuickTime control panel. On the Audio tab, set “Default Music Synthesizer” to “General MIDI“.

On the Advanced tab, disable “Enable playback of Adobe Flash tracks“.

On the browser tab, click on “MIME Settings“. Under “Miscellaneous“, make sure “Flash media” is unchecked.

8. Check if the file msacm32.drv is present in your Windows system32 folder. If not, copy it from another PC (that has the same version of Windows) and place the file in the system32 folder.

9. If you are also having sound problems with other applications, then re-installing your audio drivers might solve the problem.

Q.12 In my Windows XP, when I use Microsoft Automatic Update or Windows Update, I get an error message:

Sol. Click Start then Run then type regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Delivery\

Change LocalCacheDrive to a valid drive letter like C.

That’s It.

Q.13 How to start system restore from the command prompt in Windows XP?

Sol. This will help you troubleshoot the ‘System Restore‘ tool when it cannot run from a Recovery Console prompt.

Start the ‘System Restore‘ tool at a command prompt

1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup then start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press Enter:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Q.14  I’ve been having many weird pop-ups and my computer has been running slower than usual?

Sol. This can very be the cause of an adware attack or malicious virus. If left untreated, spyware can collect information such as your browsing habits as well as other personal information from your computer. A virus can be just as bad and destroy or corrupt the files on your computer. Immediately turn off your computer and call the program vendor.

Q.15 My computer reboots itself without warning, how can I stop this?

Sol. It seems your computer may reboot for no apparent reason, and without any prior warning. Obviously you can stop this.

This is the default behavior when Windows XP encounters a System failure. This behavior can be changed by going to the ‘System‘ applet in ‘Control Panel‘, select the ‘Advanced‘ tab and click the ‘Settings‘ button under the ‘Startup‘ and ‘Recovery‘ heading. Under ‘System Failure‘, un-check ‘Automatically Restart‘.

Q.16 How can I customize title bar in Internet Explorer?

Sol. Here are few steps to perform:

Press Start–>Run, type regedit and press ENTER.

Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Window Title

Create a new string value, or modify the existing value, to equal the title you want for.

Windows 2000 and XP Pro users can accomplish this by using the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) and changing the Browser Title under User Configuration->Window Settings–>Browser User Interface.

Q.17 When I play a DVD in Media Player, it gets freeze during playback?

Sol. Make sure that your DVD drive is set at the correct region, and that the region of your DVD drive matches that of the DVD.

You can edit the region settings of your DVD drive here: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM drives

Media Player Classic can only play DVDs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista.

Q.18 In Windows Movie Maker when I import a file. I get an error message?

Sol. As we know Windows Movie Maker normally only import AVI, MPEG, and WMV files. It will refuse to import any other file types.

It will show an error message like this: “The file X is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.“

Fortunately, there is a trick to make it import other file types. All you need to do is rename your file so that it has the file extension .avi. Using this trick you should be able to import FLV, MP4, and other file types.

Don’t forget to rename your files back to their original extensions when you are done using them in Movie Maker.

Another configuration tweak you you might need to make is to adjust the compatibility settings of Movie Maker.

Movie Maker menu -> Tools -> Options -> Compatibility -> enable “ffdshow video decoder“.

Q.19. Does you have any solution to add Recycle Bin to My Computer in Windows Seven or Vista?

Sol. Yes, here is how it can be done:

Open REGEDIT

Browse this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

Right-click on this folder, Proceed New->Key. Now enter this key: {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Now come to desktop and open My Computer. In ‘Other‘ Pane, you will have recycle bin. If still it doesn’t appear restart the computer.

Q.20 How can I create a nameless folder on PC?

Sol. Select a folder whom you want to be nameless.

Right-click, choose rename option.

Now press and hold the alt key and type numbers 0160 from numpad simultaneously. Do not use number keys present above character keys.

Press Enter and nameless folder is created right now.

Q.21 My PC is taking too much time to startup, what I can do at my level?

Sol. If Windows is taking its time to start up or shut down, there might be a problem.

To find out what’s going on, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Create a DWORD value called ‘verbosestatus‘ and set it to 1.

Restart your PC and Windows will tell you what it’s getting up to.

Q.22 Every time I start my computer I get the error message:

“Windows-No Disk”

“Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c”.

This message box dissappear only when I press ‘Cancel’ multiple times.

Sol. This is an error associated with qttask.exe

Click Start->Run->msconfig

On general tab tick ‘Selective Startup‘.

On the ‘Startup‘ tab, find ‘qttask‘ and unmark the box next to it.

Click ‘Apply‘, and restart the PC.

Q.23 When I insert a CD/DVD on my PC, it won’t start automatically?

Sol. This requires to alter the autoplay settings.

Go to : My Computer->Icon of CD-ROM->Properties

Select the Autoplay tab, and choose type of CD [Music, Picture, Data etc.]

Select an action to perform or select to take no action.

Q.24  A year ago, I deleted a folder full of images, now can I recover that folder?

Sol. If you happened to have to Norton Utilities or some other product with an undelete function, then you may be able to recover that. But if you had no such utilities, then you probably won’t be to get the folder back. Unfortunately some businesses that specializes data recovery are not cheap. Still if you are interested, you can find some local businesses in yellow pages under ‘Data Recovery‘.

Q.25 In Vista, I am able to create one dail-up connection, but unable to create second one as it overrides first one. How can I create multiple connections?

Sol. Create your first connection and connect it.

Open Internet Explorer.

Select tools.

Select Internet Options.

Select the connections tab.

Now select the ‘Add‘ button. From here you will be able to create second connection.

Q.26 How to disable script debugging, runtime errors in Internet Explorer?

Sol. You can configure Internet Explorer to ignore these scripts and runtime errors. Please follow this:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Click on Tools, then on Internet Options.

3. Click on the Advanced tab.

4. Look for the “Disable script debugging” line and put a check mark in the box.

5. Now look for the “Display a notification about every script error” line and remove the check mark in the box.

Q.27 My PC boots up to a black screen with a message that my hard drive does not exist.

Sol. Generally it occurs due to dead or dying CMOS battery. CMOS is where all the basic BIOS settings are stored and when you power off the system, battery provides enough power to keep data alive. Here’s how you can fix this problem:

Access your CMOS settings by holding down either ‘Del‘ key or F2 key when you boot up. There must be a line in bottom of the screen of that says press ‘Del‘ or F2 to access setup.

Once in CMOS go  to each page and write down the settings or use a digital camera to take a picture of each page.

Buy a new battery. This is a fact that you have to replace this battery every two years. To help you more, some excellent tools are available here.
